How Much Electricity Does an Air Fryer Use?
Calculate air fryer electricity use and compare it with an oven based on appliance power and cooking time.

How Much Electricity Does an Air Fryer Use?
The wattage printed on an air fryer is not its constant energy use. To estimate consumption, multiply power by running time. A high-powered air fryer may still use less energy than an oven because it heats a smaller space for much less time.
Calculate the energy used by one cook
Use this formula:
energy in kWh = power in kW × time in hours
A 1,500 W air fryer running for 20 minutes uses a theoretical maximum of about 0.5 kWh: 1.5 × 20/60. In practice, the thermostat cycles the heating element, so actual use may be lower. Multiply kWh by the unit rate on your electricity bill to estimate the cost.
| Appliance and time | Calculation | Maximum energy |
|---|---|---|
| 1,500 W air fryer, 20 min | 1.5 × 0.33 h | 0.50 kWh |
| 2,000 W air fryer, 30 min | 2 × 0.5 h | 1.00 kWh |
| 2,500 W oven, 45 min | 2.5 × 0.75 h | 1.88 kWh |
These examples are estimates. A plug-in energy meter gives the best measurement for your appliance.
Air fryer or oven: which uses less?
For a small or medium portion, an air fryer usually benefits from a smaller cavity and short preheat. An oven may make more sense for several dishes or one very large batch. Comparing label wattage alone is misleading: compare the total time and energy required for the whole meal.
Our air fryer versus conventional oven guide covers the other differences. Use the oven-to-air-fryer converter to avoid unnecessary cooking time.
Use less energy without compromising food
- Skip a long preheat when the recipe does not benefit from it.
- Cook a sensible quantity without crowding the basket.
- Use two baskets to synchronise parts of the same meal.
- Avoid repeatedly opening the drawer; check near the end instead.
- Keep the crisper plate and air inlets clean.
Quick recipes such as Parmesan courgettes or mustard cod make good use of the small cooking chamber.
If your current capacity forces you to run many batches, compare air fryers by household size. The most efficient choice is usually an appliance sized for the portions you actually cook.
