Air Fryer Beginner’s Guide: Get Great Results from Day One
An air fryer heats quickly and moves very hot air around your food. It can cook vegetables, chicken, fish and desserts. Three habits make the biggest difference when you are starting out: leave room for air to circulate, check food near the end and adjust timings to your appliance.
Before your first cook
Remove all packaging, wash the basket and crisper plate in soapy water, then dry them. Place the appliance on a stable surface with clearance around its air vents. Read the manual too: maximum temperature, dishwasher-safe parts and preheating advice vary by model.
A slight smell may occur during the first empty heating cycle. Ventilate the room and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Never fill the drawer with oil as you would a deep fryer.
Simple settings for your first meal
Choose an easy recipe with evenly sized pieces. Roasted vegetables, homemade fries or roast chicken will quickly show you how your appliance behaves.
- Arrange food in a loose, even layer.
- Add only a light coating of oil when the recipe calls for it.
- Set the stated temperature and time.
- Shake the basket or turn pieces halfway through.
- Check a few minutes early, then add time in small steps.
Timings are always a guide. Power, quantity and food thickness all change the result. To adapt an oven recipe, use our oven-to-air-fryer conversion guide and cooking converter.
Should you preheat or fill the basket?
Preheating is most useful for short cooks and foods that need immediate heat. It is often unnecessary for long cooks or gentle reheating. Our guide to preheating an air fryer explains when it helps.
Do not pack the basket to the top. Hot air needs space between pieces. For a large quantity, two batches usually crisp better than one crowded basket.
Everyday safety and cleaning
Use silicone or wooden tools to protect the coating. Keep vents clear, avoid touching the hot drawer and unplug the appliance before cleaning. Let it cool, then wash removable parts after each use. Follow our complete air fryer cleaning guide.
Useful equipment without unnecessary gadgets
Tongs, a food thermometer and a correctly sized baking tin cover most needs. Always check the basket’s internal measurements before buying. See our essential accessory guide and air fryer accessory selection.
Start with a familiar recipe, note the settings that work and change one variable at a time. After a few cooks, you will know how to adapt timings to your portions.
